Huron Alumni

Helping others to see not only Huron but also the world.

Huron alumna Karen Prieur arrived at Huron a "small-town girl" but left secure in the knowledge and confidence she could take on - and see - the world. As an adult, travelling became important and once she had a family, travelling became a priority.

Looking back at her own Huron experiences and seeing how travelling greatly enriched her family, Karen considered what she could do to provide international opportunities for Huron students. Establishing The Karen Prieur Volunteer Service Fund at Huron was her answer.

"It's a great way to give back to the school," says Karen. "I thought it would be a great opportunity for students to travel abroad and see the world like my children did."

Established in 2005, Karen's fund provides support for Huron students in the College's volunteer service program. Those students work with primary school students in both London and abroad to promote literacy and help improve local communities. The Fund also includes support for the Huron in Honduras project, in which students volunteer each May for three weeks in local Honduras communities along with a Huron faculty member.

Attending Huron was a formative experience for Karen and she is very grateful.

"I feel Huron really gave me a good basis for starting my adult life," says Karen. "I wanted to show my appreciation."
