Huron Alumni

Profile: Benjamin Cheung

Arrived at Huron without a home and graduated knowing his home would always be here.

Benjamin Cheung can thank his association with Huron to a fluke - he arrived at Western in 1966 after Frosh Week was over. He quickly realized he had no place to live until Huron offered a solution - "they had an opening in the men's residence so," Benjamin says simply, "Huron became my home."

That home has provided him with lifelong memories, friends and experiences which Benjamin credits with shaping his life to this day. A cherished memory is of Norman Ballard, Sub-Warden in the O'Neil residence where Benjamin lived while at Huron. Benjamin says Norman provided invaluable life support both in good times and bad. "He took me under his wings," Benjamin recalls, "and I thrived."

To help ensure other students experience the same Huron hospitality and fellowship he did, Benjamin established the Benjamin Cheung Theology Bursary in 2006. The bursary is awarded to Huron theology students who qualify for financial assistance as they prepare for ministry.

"When you get older you have a little more money and you wish to give back," says Benjamin, who also serves on Huron's Alumni Board. "I'm religious as well. The best way (for me) to spread the word about God is through this. I'm not trained in theology so this was the best way."
