Huron Alumni

Profile: Jim Carr

"I wanted to award students who not only take something out of the College but give back to it as well."

For Jim Carr, establishing a bursary at Huron is a way to "give back" to Huron, which is important for all alumni to consider, he says. As a student at Huron, Jim enjoyed the small professor-to-student ratio and made some of his best friends at the institution.

"At Huron you have an identity; you're not just a number," says Jim, who chairs the Huron Foundation's Investment Committee. The bursary he established in his name provides financial assistance to students on the basis of family income and is awarded to an "all-round" student who "exemplifies the spirit and collegiality of Huron and contributes to the overall life of the College."

Says Jim: "I wanted to award students who not only take something out of the College but give back to it as well."

As in the case of other donors, Jim was attracted to the fact that the Government of Ontario will match donations as part of its Ontario Trust for Student Support program, so that one gift can go twice as far.
